Bloomberg: Hungary’s incoming PM may slow Ukraine’s path to EU membership
Hungary’s next prime minister Péter Magyar is expected to oppose proposals for the accelerated accession of Ukraine to the European Union.
The position would indicate a continuation of Budapest’s cautious approach to Ukraine’s EU integration, Bloomberg reports.
A senior EU official said that it should not be expected that Péter Magyar would suddenly support Ukraine’s accession to the EU after Viktor Orbán blocked official EU negotiations with Kyiv for months, adding that Magyar might at least allow the EU to begin formal talks with Ukraine, although he was unlikely to support the idea of accelerated EU membership, which faced broad resistance.
According to the source cited by the agency, France and Germany are also considering alternative pathways for Ukraine within the European Union framework, rather than full membership.
