Cargo transportation up from China via Azerbaijan
Executive Director of the Export and Investment Promotion Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (AZPROMO) Yusif Abdullayev has stated that 178,000 tons of cargo were transported through Azerbaijan from January to May 2024, marking a 31 per cent increase compared to the same period of last year.
Abdullayev made these comments during the conference entitled "Demonstration zone of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation - Promoting Logistics and Trade in Azerbaijan", Caliber.Az reports.
“Azerbaijan occupies a strategic position between Europe and Asia, and transit and logistics are crucial areas of cooperation. In the first five months of this year, 178,000 tons of cargo were transited between China and Azerbaijan, reflecting a 31 per cent increase compared to the previous year. Rail transport specifically saw a significant surge, rising by 93 per cent,” he added.
Abdullayev also highlighted Azerbaijan's role among the Belt and Road Initiative member states, noting that after China, Azerbaijan is the second-largest investor in infrastructure and logistics development within the initiative.
