China urges Israel, Iran to uphold ceasefire
China expressed deep concern on June 8 over renewed hostilities between Israel and Iran, calling on all sides to respect a fragile ceasefire and pursue diplomatic solutions to regional tensions.
Speaking at a regular press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said Beijing was closely monitoring the latest developments in the Middle East, foreign media reports.
"Resuming hostilities is not in any party's interest," Lin told reporters, adding: "It is hoped all relevant parties will fulfil their commitment to a ceasefire."
He further stated: "We hope that relevant parties honor their commitment of ceasefire, keep to the momentum of negotiation, and stay committed to resolving disputes through diplomatic and political channels and create necessary conditions for restoring regional peace and stability in the Middle East and Gulf region."
The comments came after Israel and Iran exchanged strikes early on June 8, raising concerns that the conflict could once again escalate into a broader regional confrontation. Israel launched attacks on targets in central and western Iran in response to missile fire from Tehran, while Iran answered with multiple waves of retaliatory strikes. Explosions were reported in central Israel as air defence systems attempted to intercept incoming missiles.
The situation was further complicated by Yemen's Houthi movement, which launched attacks toward Israel and warned that it would target Israel-linked vessels in the Red Sea.
In separate remarks, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that resolving nuclear safety concerns is connected to achieving a political settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. The spokesperson also urged the parties involved to "work together to de-escalate the crisis as soon as possible and create conditions for the resumption of negotiations."
Beijing additionally underscored the importance of cooperation among China, Russia and India, stating that "maintaining good relations between China, Russia, and India not only serves the interests of the three countries but also contributes to regional and global peace, security, stability, and development."
