NATO to open first liaison office in Jordan soon US Secretary of State says
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has stated that NATO plans to open a liaison office in Jordan in 2025.
Blinken made these remarks during a press conference in Brussels, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
NATO will establish its first liaison office in Amman next year, aiming to further strengthen relations between NATO and countries in the Middle East. Blinken emphasised that this move is part of NATO's ongoing efforts to expand its ties in the region. In July, the final declaration from the NATO summit highlighted the alliance's intention to increase its presence in both Africa and the Middle East. The document also mentioned that NATO had already coordinated with the Jordanian leadership to open the office in Amman.
The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) is a military alliance formed in 1949. After the Cold War concluded, NATO evolved into a “cooperative-security” organisation. Today, it consists of 32 member countries.
NATO's primary goal is to ensure the freedom and safety of its members through both political and military means.
Political – NATO works to uphold democratic values by facilitating dialogue and cooperation among its members on defence and security matters. This collaboration helps address challenges, foster trust, and, over time, prevent conflicts.
Military – While NATO prioritises peaceful conflict resolution, it is prepared to take military action if diplomatic efforts fail. Under NATO's founding treaty (Article 5 of the Washington Treaty), the alliance can conduct crisis-management operations, either independently, under a United Nations mandate, or in partnership with other nations and international organisations.
