Dozens of Iranians cross into Türkiye amid deadly crackdown on protests
Dozens of Iranians crossed into Türkiye on January 14 as authorities in Iran continue to crack down on one of the largest waves of protest against the Islamic Republic's clerical rule.
Iranian families and individuals arrived in Türkiye’s eastern province of Van through the Kapikoy border gate, carrying luggage and other belongings. Many then boarded vehicles heading to nearby towns, Caliber.Az reports.
Two diplomats told Reuters that the number of people crossing from Iran to Türkiye has risen following advisories from several countries urging their citizens to leave Iran. However, a Turkish security official at the border said the situation was “not extraordinary,” with no notable increase in arrivals, though developments were being closely monitored.
Separately, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasised the need for dialogue to resolve regional tensions in a call with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araqchi, on January 14, a Turkish Foreign Ministry source said.
US President Donald Trump urged Iranians on January 13 to continue protesting, saying “help is on the way.” Meanwhile, a rights group reported that at least 2,600 people have been killed in Iran as the government attempts to quell the widespread dissent.
