Economic and transport ties take centre stage in Azerbaijan-EU talks

18 September 2025 21:13

Azerbaijan and the European Commission have held discussions on a draft agreement aimed at financing projects in demining, water resource management, and the sustainable development of the transport sector.

The talks took place in Baku during a meeting between Azerbaijan’s Minister of Economy, Mikayil Jabbarov, and European Union Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighbourhood Policy, Marta Kos, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

During the meeting, both sides emphasised with satisfaction that the European Union remains one of Azerbaijan’s main foreign trade partners. The steady development of economic ties was highlighted, along with the successful cooperation already established in the fields of energy and investment. The discussions also pointed to the significant potential for expanding collaboration in the transport sector.

The agenda further included investment initiatives in energy, the digital economy, transport, the private sector, and other areas within the framework of the EU’s Global Gateway strategy for global connectivity.

Commissioner Kos arrived in Azerbaijan on September 18. As part of her visit, she met with President Ilham Aliyev and familiarised herself with Azerbaijan’s demining operations in the liberated territories, with a particular focus on the work underway in Aghdam.
