Envoy: Iraq hopes to join BRICS in future
Iraq hopes to eventually become a member of the BRICS group, the country's ambassador to Russia, Abdul-Karim Hashim Mustafa, has said.
"BRICS is a very important organisation, and I hope that one day Iraq will become part of it," the ambassador told Russia’s state-run TASS news agency.
Mustafa said any future accession would depend on a number of factors, including how the bloc operates and the criteria for membership.
According to the ambassador, potential membership "depends on many factors, such as how the organisation operates and what the conditions for joining BRICS are, but it would certainly be a good idea."
BRICS was established in 2006 on Russia's initiative by Brazil, Russia, India and China. The bloc adopted its current name after South Africa joined in 2011.
The grouping has expanded in recent years. Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia became full members in January 2024, followed by Indonesia in January 2025.
