EU ahead of US in supporting Kyiv with over $26 billion lead
The European Union (EU) continues to provide steadfast financial support to Ukraine, exceeding the United States (US) by €23 billion, according to a recent report from Germany's Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW).
Since the arrival of Donald Trump in office on January 20, 2025, US aid to Ukraine has come to a halt, while European support remains consistent, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
As of the latest figures, EU assistance has reached a total of €138 billion, with no significant changes to the financial, military, or humanitarian aid packages since Trump’s inauguration.
The IfW’s report highlights the growing gap between the EU and the US in terms of financial aid. "Following Trump’s swearing-in, American aid has ceased. No new military, financial, or humanitarian aid has been provided since the last US package on January 9, 2025, under the Biden administration," the report states.
The think tank also noted a similar situation in January 2024, when a deadlock in the US Congress led to a prolonged delay in assistance. In contrast, European countries, including the UK, Germany, Norway, Denmark, and Sweden, have continued to supply aid, with the European Commission recently issuing its first loan of €3 billion.
As of early 2025, while the EU remains ahead in financial aid, the US still outpaces the EU in military support, having provided €65 billion in military assistance since February 2022—€1 billion more than Europe.
