EU: Azerbaijan partnership key to diversifying Europe’s gas supplies
The European Union’s partnership with Azerbaijan is of significant importance for diversifying gas supply sources, said Cristina Lobillo Borrero, Director of the Energy Platform and International Relations at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Energy (DG ENER).
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of Baku Energy Week, Lobillo Borrero said the EU’s strategy extends far beyond energy alone and encompasses broader areas of cooperation with Azerbaijan, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
She noted that the European Union has established a strategic partnership with Azerbaijan in renewable energy, the development of energy interconnectors, and efforts aimed at achieving decarbonization goals.
“We also import gas. For us, diversification of gas supply sources is important, and the partnership with Azerbaijan plays a key role in this. Thus, our cooperation is based on two main pillars. The first is cooperation in clean energy and future energy system interconnectivity. The second is current gas supplies. It is important to support the EU in the process of phasing out Russian gas,” she said.
