EU Commission chief eyes dialogue with Zelenskyy on US-backed peace plan
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen plans to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy following the emergence of the 28-point US peace plan, European Commission spokesperson Paula Pinho said during a briefing in Brussels.
The planned call comes as the proposal gains attention among European leaders and G20 participants, Caliber.Az reports, citing Ukrainian media.
“This peace plan, or 28-point plan, has been released. And the President announced this morning that she will discuss the situation with both European leaders and G20 leaders who are in Johannesburg on the sidelines of the G20, and she also said that she will contact President Zelenskyy to discuss this issue,” Pinho stated.
She did not specify when the conversation with Zelensky would take place, noting only, “I have no further information.”
Pinho added that the outreach could occur at any moment, given the pace of consultations surrounding the plan. “But these calls may be imminent, and there may also be further calls. (…) There may be other contacts in the context of the G20 and during [Ursula von der Leyen’s] stay in Africa,” she said in response to questions about the timing of the discussions and whether von der Leyen also intends to speak with US President Donald Trump.
The European Commission has previously emphasized that any peace process must adhere to the principle of “nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine,” underscoring the importance of von der Leyen’s direct engagement with Zelensky as deliberations over the US plan continue among international partners.
