EU considers lengthening sanctions against Russia

13 September 2024 13:56

EU representatives are set to explore the possibility of extending sanctions against Russia for up to three years, a significant shift from the current practice of renewing them every six months.

This potential change is being discussed in response to pressures and requirements from the United States, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media sources.

The European Commission (EC) is also contemplating making these sanctions open-ended. This reconsideration is partly influenced by U.S. demands for guarantees regarding a $50 billion loan to Kyiv, financed by Russian assets within the Group of Seven (G7). The U.S. is seeking assurances that these assets will remain frozen in the near future before committing to the loan.

A European official commented, "Thirty-six months is still a possibility. The Americans have made it clear that a shorter period would be unacceptable for them."

However, the process may face complications. Hungary has expressed concerns about the potential extension of sanctions. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, known for his opposition to aid for Ukraine, might use this situation to negotiate for certain positions within the upcoming European Commission. This could lead to delays or obstacles in agreeing on new sanctions deadlines.

If Hungary’s opposition persists, the EU might forgo the extension of anti-Russian sanctions. In such a scenario, the EU may provide $40 billion in aid and hope that the U.S. will cover the remainder of its G7 commitments.
