EU flag to return to Hungarian parliament after 12 years
The flag of the European Union will once again be displayed on the facade of Hungary’s parliament building after more than a decade of absence, Prime Minister-elect Péter Magyar announced.
In a Facebook post, he said during the inaugural session of the National Assembly, the EU flag will be raised alongside the Hungarian national flag and the Szekler flag (used by the ethnically Hungarian Székely community of Romania), Caliber.Az reports.
The EU flag has not been flown on the Hungarian parliament building for more than 12 years.
Even during Hungary’s presidency of the EU Council in 2024, it was not displayed, with authorities arguing that such placement was not mandatory.
However, under a 2004 law, the EU flag is required to be raised on certain state buildings under specific conditions, although exemptions apply to several institutions, including parliament.
