EU proposes Azerbaijani gas transit to Europe via Ukraine
EU officials have approached Azerbaijan with a plan to transport Azerbaijani gas to Europe via Ukraine.
As reported by Interfax, this information was disclosed by Politico, citing high-ranking Azerbaijani officials.
"The European Union and the transit countries, we are talking about, have contacted Azerbaijan on this issue," Hikmat Hajiyev, assistant to the Azerbaijani president and head of the foreign policy department of the presidential administration, told the publication.
"We are currently considering various options on how we can contribute to this process. I would refrain from specifying a timeframe, but, again, there was (...) a call and we took it seriously because it is a matter of European energy security," Hajiyev added.
An Azerbaijani diplomat, who wished to remain anonymous, also commented on the situation. "Something is happening on this issue," he stated. "We see some risks for the security of supply when it comes to stopping transit through Ukraine due to existing obstacles in the infrastructure of the European gas system," he explained.
