EU to review Türkiye’s bid to join SAFE defence mechanism
The European Commission has officially placed Türkiye’s application to join the SAFE mechanism, designed to strengthen European defence capabilities, on its agenda.
A decision is expected on November 30, following the completion of a technical assessment process, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkish media.
Brussels has confirmed that it has taken into account the concerns of EU member states when reviewing Türkiye’s application to join SAFE.
A European Commission spokesperson said there are “regulatory safeguards ensuring that no third country can undermine the interests of the EU or its member states.”
They added that the evaluation represents “a general approach, not specifically directed at Türkiye, but taking into account the interests of member states.”
Joining the SAFE mechanism involves a two-stage process: a recommendation from the Commission followed by approval from the Council. In Türkiye’s case, this requires the unanimous consent of all 27 EU member states.
