Flights resume at Türkiye's Izmir airport as wildfires subside
Izmir's Adnan Menderes Airport on Türkiye's Aegean coast has resumed normal operations following a temporary suspension due to wildfires, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkish media.
On June 29, the international airport was forced to temporarily suspend all flight operations due to large-scale wildfires in İzmir’s Menderes, Seferihisar, and Gaziemir districts. The fires, exacerbated by strong winds and dry conditions, began around 1:00 p.m. local time and spread rapidly, threatening residential areas and reducing visibility near the airport.
The Turkish General Directorate of Forestry deployed extensive resources, including 18 aircraft, 10 helicopters, 40 fire trucks, and 687 personnel, but strong winds limited aerial firefighting efforts. As a result, Adnan Menderes Airport halted all takeoffs and landings from 4:00 p.m. local time, with incoming flights diverted to alternate airports and departures cancelled or delayed.
