Georgia, Azerbaijan roll out digital e-permit system for cross-border freight

20 July 2026 13:46

Georgia and Azerbaijan have launched a digital system for issuing permits for international road freight transport, marking a step towards fully electronic cross-border transport documentation.

Georgian haulage operators can now obtain permits for journeys to Azerbaijan in electronic format, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media.

The new system is expected to streamline administrative procedures, accelerate the exchange of data between the two countries and reduce technical barriers for transport companies.

As part of the initial phase, Georgia and Azerbaijan exchanged 1,000 electronic permits for each category of transport authorisation in 2026. The two countries plan to complete the transition to a fully digital permit system from 2027.

The move forms part of broader efforts to modernise international road freight transport and improve the efficiency of cross-border trade.

Separately, Kazakhstan and Georgia are set to begin testing the electronic exchange of international road transport permits through the e-Permit system from July 22, further expanding the use of digital transport documentation across the region.
