Georgia's gas imports from Russia surge to multi-year high in 2024
Between January and September 2024, Georgia's natural gas imports from Russia increased by 6.5 per cent, reaching $90.09 million - marking the highest level in recent years.
According to data released by Georgia's National Statistics Service, the overall value of the country’s natural gas imports during this period, however, fell by 18.2 per cent, totalling $250.33 million, Caliber.Az reports.
As a result, Russia’s share of Georgia's total gas imports rose sharply to 36 per cent, up from 27.7 per cent in the same period in 2023 and just 12.2 per cent in 2022. This marks the highest share of Russian gas in Georgia’s total supply since the statistics began being tracked in 2009.
Conversely, Azerbaijan—the leading gas supplier to Georgia—saw its share decline to 64 per cent in the first nine months of 2024, down from 72.3 per cent last year and 87.8 per cent in 2022.
In 2023, Georgia imported a total of 2.25 million cubic meters of natural gas, with Azerbaijan accounting for 78.5 per cent of the total supply and Russia providing 21.5 per cent. The value of gas imports from Russia last year was $110.3 million, while imports from Azerbaijan amounted to $313.5 million.
