German vice chancellor visits Kyiv, reaffirms strong support for Ukraine
German Finance Minister and Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil made an unannounced visit to Kyiv, reiterating Germany’s steadfast support for Ukraine amid Russia’s ongoing invasion.
During his visit, Klingbeil emphasised the importance of securing Ukraine’s defence and the broader implications for European security, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
“It is about Ukrainian, but also European security,” he said, highlighting the urgent need for “reliable security guarantees that ensure lasting peace for Ukraine.”
Klingbeil indicated that discussions would likely focus on key security guarantees aimed at ending the conflict. He stressed that Germany is working closely with international partners to coordinate efforts.
“Putin should have no illusions that Germany's support for Ukraine could crumble,” Klingbeil said. “On the contrary: We remain Ukraine's second-largest supporter worldwide and the largest in Europe. Ukraine can continue to rely on Germany.”
Urging Russian President Vladimir Putin to show genuine interest in peace, Klingbeil also underlined the necessity of involving Ukraine in any negotiations. He called for a ceasefire and stressed the importance of reliable security guarantees to secure lasting peace.
“To this end, we are coordinating closely internationally. Germany will fulfil its responsibilities,” he said.
During his visit, Klingbeil plans to meet with representatives of the Ukrainian government, parliament, and civil society to discuss ongoing support and cooperation.
