The slogans, delivered during the official celebrations for Greek Independence Day, sparked significant controversy and prompted an official investigation.
Greek authorities launched an administrative inquiry into the matter, focusing on the naval personnel, many of whom were students. The investigation has now concluded, with the involved individuals receiving various punishments. Some of the servicemen were sentenced to 20 days in prison, while others were handed lighter sentences.
The Turkish Foreign Ministry immediately condemned the incident, labeling the behaviour as unacceptable and emphasizing its negative impact on Turkish-Greek relations.
Greece's opposition party, Coalition of the Radical Left (SYRIZA), also denounced the actions, calling for a thorough investigation into the incident. The opposition stressed the importance of maintaining respectful relations between Greece and Türkiye and rejected such provocative actions.
