India's new president takes oath
Droupadi Murmu has taken oath as the 15th president of India.
At a ceremony in parliament on 25 July, Chief Justice of India N V Ramana administered the oath of office to Murmu in the presence of Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several federal ministers, according to The Indian Express.
"Reaching the Presidential post is not my personal achievement, it is the achievement of every poor in India. My election is evidence that the poor in India can not just dream but also fulfil those dreams," Murmu said in her speech as the 15th president of India.
On 21 July, Murmu defeated opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha and became the first person from the tribal community and the second woman to hold the highest constitutional post in the country.
The president in India is the head of the state, but does not exercise executive powers.
