Iran–Azerbaijan talks target faster freight transit through Astara
Iran and Azerbaijan have coordinated steps to boost freight traffic through the Astara customs border checkpoint, with a focus on simplifying procedures and reducing delays for cargo trucks.
According to information provided to Trend by the Iranian Embassy in Azerbaijan, Iran’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mojtaba Demirchilou, visited the Azerbaijani customs border checkpoint in Astara and met with local customs officials.
During the visit, the sides held detailed discussions on measures to streamline and accelerate the passage of trucks through the Astara checkpoint. As part of these talks, agreements were reached to increase the number of trucks allowed to cross the border and to shorten waiting times for export cargo.
Officials also noted that freight volumes through the Astara customs checkpoint typically rise sharply toward the end of each year, making the agreed steps particularly important for ensuring smoother and more efficient cross-border transportation during peak periods.
