Iran declares nuclear talks "meaningless" after massive Israeli strike

Iran declared on June 13 that its dialogue with the US regarding Tehran’s nuclear program has become “meaningless” following Israel’s largest-ever military strike against the country. Tehran accused Washington of supporting the attack.

According to the semi-official Tasnim news agency, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei stated, “The other side (the US) acted in a way that makes dialogue meaningless. You cannot claim to negotiate and at the same time divide work by allowing the Zionist regime (Israel) to target Iran’s territory.”

Baghaei added that Israel had “succeeded in influencing” the diplomatic process, emphasising that the Israeli attack would not have occurred without Washington’s approval.

Earlier, Iran accused the US of complicity in Israel’s strikes, an allegation Washington denied. At the United Nations Security Council, the US urged Tehran that it would be “wise” to negotiate over its nuclear program.

The sixth round of US-Iran nuclear talks was scheduled for June 15 in Muscat, but its status became uncertain in the wake of the Israeli strikes.

Iran maintains that its uranium enrichment activities are solely for civilian purposes and rejects Israeli claims that it is secretly developing nuclear weapons.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump told Reuters that he and his team were aware of the impending Israeli attacks but still believed there was potential for reaching an agreement.
