Iran, Russia reach agreement on construction of new nuclear power plants

26 September 2025 14:39

The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) has announced that negotiations and agreements have been finalized with the Russian delegation for the construction of five nuclear power plants, each larger in capacity than the existing Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant.

The announcement was made by Behrouz Kamalvandi, spokesman for the AEOI, on the sidelines of World Atom Week (WAW) 2025 at the Atom Expo in Moscow, Mehr news agency reports.

The Iranian delegation, headed by AEOI Chief Mohamad Eslami, is participating in the event, which marks a major international gathering in the nuclear energy sector.

“This trip was multi-purpose; not only did it include attending this important international summit, as well as Eslami's speech to elaborate on the country's policies. It also included pursuing relations with Russia in various fields of nuclear cooperation,” Kamalvandi stated.

He commended Russia’s cooperation with Iran on the construction and operation of the Bushehr Power Plant, located in southern Iran, emphasizing that the facility complies fully with international standards.

Kamalvandi further revealed the scope of new agreements made during the delegation’s visit:

“Negotiations and agreements were made, especially in the area of building power plants larger than Bushehr with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts, which includes a total of four units with a capacity of nearly 5,000 megawatts in the south of the country,” he said.

World Atom Week 2025 is being hailed by Russian officials as the largest international forum in the nuclear sector, coinciding with the 80th anniversary of Russia’s nuclear industry. The event featured an address by President Vladimir Putin and was attended by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi, who also held a meeting with the Russian president.

Iran has also established a national pavilion at the exhibition, showcasing its latest achievements in nuclear technology. The exhibition, open to the public from September 25 to 28, offers a unique opportunity to explore advancements from Iran and other participating countries in the nuclear energy field.
