Iran’s Foreign Ministry veteran appointed as ambassador to Azerbaijan
In a move highlighting the strategic importance of Baku-Tehran relations, Iran has officially appointed Mojtaba Demirchilou as its new ambassador to Azerbaijan.
The news was reported by Iran’s semi-official ISNA agency and cited by local media, per Caliber.Az.
Demirchilou is currently serving as the Director General of the Eurasia Department within Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and is widely regarded as a seasoned expert in regional affairs. His background in Eurasian diplomacy signals Tehran’s intent to bolster its engagement with Azerbaijan amid evolving geopolitical dynamics in the South Caucasus.
“In his current capacity as Director General for Eurasia at the Foreign Ministry, Mojtaba Demirchilou has now been introduced as the new ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Baku,” ISNA reported.
Earlier on June 2, Iranian officials had announced that a new ambassador to Azerbaijan would soon be named, though they withheld the individual’s identity at the time. Demirchilou’s appointment now confirms Tehran’s choice to send a top-ranking Eurasia specialist to manage its diplomatic mission in Baku.
