The Day of Solidarity of World Azerbaijanis is observed annually on December 31 and is seen as an important symbol of unity among Azerbaijanis worldwide.
The holiday traces its origins to late December 1989, when border barriers along the Soviet–Iranian frontier in Nakhchivan were dismantled, enabling reunions between Azerbaijanis from the north and south. Around the same time, a conference of Turkic-speaking peoples in Istanbul called for the establishment of a day dedicated to Azerbaijani solidarity.
On December 16, 1991, Heydar Aliyev, then chairman of the Supreme Council of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, officially declared December 31 as the Day of Solidarity of World Azerbaijanis.
