Iranian MPs urge foreign ministry to withdraw from NPT
A group of 60 Iranian parliamentarians has called on Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to begin the process of withdrawing the country from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), Nour News reported.
The legislators cited the “hostile actions” of the “EU trio” – the United Kingdom, Germany, and France – which triggered the UN Security Council’s snapback sanctions mechanism against Iran, as the reason for their initiative, Caliber.Az reports, citing Iranian media.
The call was made during an open session of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, where MPs also expressed dissatisfaction with Iran’s participation in talks initiated by the United States and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
On August 28, 2025, these European nations initiated the snapback process due to Iran's non-compliance with its nuclear commitments under the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). This move has led to heightened tensions between Iran and the European powers.
