Iranian parliament confirms deaths at Basij bases, police stations
During protests in Iran, shootings outside Basij militia bases and police stations killed demonstrators, and overall casualties have reached thousands, Iranian parliament’s National Security chief Ebrahim Azizi said on January 19.
Azizi noted that security forces engaged with protesters outside Basij facilities and law enforcement headquarters, Caliber.Az reports via Iranian media.
He added that authorities are finalising casualty figures, which will be released after verification.
He also slammed US President Donald Trump for backing the protesters, describing him as “self-obsessed and delusional.”
Widespread protests broke out across Iran on December 28, 2025, triggered by a severe economic downturn and the rial’s steep decline.
The unrest rapidly spread to major cities, becoming one of the largest anti-government movements since 1979, with demonstrators protesting inflation, high unemployment, and calling for systemic reforms.
Iranian authorities have responded with a harsh security crackdown, using live ammunition, making mass arrests, and enforcing strict communication restrictions, limiting media coverage and raising international alarm.
