Israel raises alarm over potential Saudi F-35 acquisition
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) submitted an official position paper to Israel’s political leadership, in which the Israeli Air Force formally opposed the proposed US sale of advanced F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia.
The document highlighted concerns that Israel’s longstanding air superiority could be jeopardized if other Middle Eastern nations acquire modern stealth aircraft. This has been a recurring point of apprehension for Israel in previous defence discussions, MIG News reports.
Israel has consistently sought to preserve its qualitative military edge in the region through the operation of cutting-edge aircraft. In the past, it has actively lobbied against F-35 sales to neighboring countries, including Türkiye and the United Arab Emirates, to prevent potential shifts in regional military balance.
Currently, Israel remains the only country in the Middle East to field F-35 jets. The Israeli Air Force operates 45 of these fifth-generation fighters, with an additional 30 aircraft on order, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to maintaining technological and tactical superiority in the region.
US President Donald Trump has affirmed that Washington intends to proceed with the sale of F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia.
However, even should the agreement be finalized, the initial delivery of the aircraft is anticipated to be no sooner than seven years from now.
