Israel summons Armenian ambassador over recognition of Palestinian state
The Armenian ambassador to Israel has been summoned for a conversation at the Foreign Ministry of the Jewish state after Yerevan decided to recognize the independence of Palestine.
Following Armenia's recognition of the Palestinian state, the Israeli Foreign Ministry summoned the Armenian ambassador to Israel for a strict reprimand, Caliber.Az reports citing Armenian media.
On June 21, Armenia announced the recognition of the Palestinian state stating that the plight in Gaza and the ongoing conflict is one of the most important issues on the international agenda that needs to be addressed.
The statement said that Armenia rejects the use of civilian infrastructure as a target during armed conflicts, violence against civilians, and captivity of civilians and joins the demands of the international community for their release.
The Foreign Ministry recalled that Armenia joined the UN General Assembly resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Moreover, Yerevan is sincerely interested in establishing long-term peace and stability in the Middle East.
"At various international platforms, we have always been in favour of a peaceful and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue and support the two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict," the statement said.
It is noted that this is the only way to ensure the legitimate aspirations of Palestinians and Israelis.
"Proceeding from the above and reaffirming its commitment to the principles of international law, equality of peoples, sovereignty and peaceful coexistence, the Republic of Armenia recognises the Palestinian state," the statement noted.
Earlier, Armenia voted in favour of extending Palestinian rights at the UN.
