James O'Brien: Azerbaijan's role in regional politics leads to peace

28 June 2024 18:03

James O'Brien, US Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, told journalists that recent events have positioned Azerbaijan at the forefront of shaping regional policies, ultimately fostering peace.

During his visit to Baku, O'Brien emphasized the strong partnership between the US and Azerbaijan across various sectors, with discussions focusing on regional dynamics and the promotion of peace, Caliber.Az reports citing local media.

He highlighted Azerbaijan's pivotal role in resolving longstanding disputes and fostering future peaceful relations, benefiting the entire region.

O'Brien underscored the importance of regional cooperation for enhancing security and facilitating trade routes from Central Asia through Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Armenia to global markets. Regarding the 907th Amendment to the Freedom Defense Act, he noted that while its repeal is not currently sought in Congress, exceptions have been historically made to enable robust US-Azerbaijan cooperation, particularly in security matters.

He also expressed US support for Azerbaijan in hosting the upcoming 29th session of the COP29, emphasizing climate change as a critical global issue and praising Azerbaijan's efforts in advancing renewable energy and addressing climate impacts.

Furthermore, O'Brien touched upon Azerbaijan's gas supplies, stressing that the country plays a crucial role as a major natural gas supplier to Europe, providing gas to eight countries with plans to expand to four more in the near future.

He noted that Azerbaijan's gas exports contribute significantly to Europe's energy security by reducing reliance on Russian gas, particularly as European countries decrease their dependence on Russian supplies.

O'Brien also elaborated on the Middle Corridor initiative, emphasizing its pivotal role in the region.

He highlighted the strategic importance of Azerbaijan in offering alternative routes for Central Asian exports, bypassing Russia or China. "There are significant opportunities for Azerbaijan to facilitate trade through the Caspian Sea to global markets, whether via Georgia or potentially through Armenia and Türkiye to the Black Sea," he explained. This diversification not only lowers transportation costs but also enhances resilience against geopolitical disruptions, benefiting millions from Tajikistan to Türkiye.

The Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, encompassing the Middle Corridor and the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railroad, underscores Azerbaijan's pivotal role in regional transportation infrastructure and economic integration.
