At UN, Pashinyan declares new era in Armenia-Azerbaijan relations

27 September 2025 21:39

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan declared that relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan have entered a decisive new stage. He noted that the statute regulating the joint work of the border demarcation commissions has been ratified, giving it the highest legal force. In addition, both countries managed to agree on a Treaty on the Establishment of Peace and Interstate Relations, which was initialled in the United States in August.

As reported by Caliber.Az with reference to Armenian media, Pashinyan made these remarks during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Armenian prime minister stressed the key role played by US President Donald Trump, highlighting that his “dedication, consistency, and principled stance made the seemingly impossible possible.” Pashinyan added: “Thus, peace has been established, but it requires daily care.”

He recalled that back in March of this year, Armenia and Azerbaijan managed to finalise a draft peace treaty establishing interstate relations, completing negotiations on the document with positive results.

“In this document, the sides, also referring to the Alma-Ata Declaration, confirmed their understanding that the borders between the former Soviet Union republics have become the international borders of the respective independent states, and on this basis, they recognise and respect each other’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, the inviolability of international borders, and political independence,” Pashinyan said.

The prime minister continued, noting that in the same document, both leaders reaffirmed “the importance of opening communications between the two countries for interstate, bilateral, and international transportation — based on respect for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and jurisdiction of states, with the aim of promoting peace, stability, and prosperity in the region and beyond.” He explained that these efforts include “unhindered communication between the main part of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic through the territory of the Republic of Armenia — with mutual benefits for Armenia’s international and domestic communications.”

Pashinyan also emphasised that it was officially recorded that Armenia “will work with the United States of America and agreed third parties on defining the framework for implementing on Armenian territory the communications project ‘Trump’s Route for International Peace and Prosperity.’” He concluded: “We confirmed our determination to undertake in good faith all measures to achieve this goal in the shortest possible time.”
