04 May 2026 18:52

The Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Martin Chungong, has been awarded an honorary medal by Azerbaijan’s Milli Majlis (Parliament) in recognition of his contribution to strengthening inter-parliamentary cooperation.

During a meeting in Baku, Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova said cooperation between Azerbaijan’s Parliament and the IPU was developing successfully and dynamically, noting that Azerbaijani lawmakers are represented in leadership roles within the organisation, Caliber.Az reports via local media.

Gafarova also highlighted engagement with the Parliamentary Network of the Non-Aligned Movement and said the IPU Secretary General had supported the expansion of this cooperation.

She underlined that efforts to promote inter-parliamentary dialogue between Baku and Yerevan serve the broader peace objectives of the IPU.

For his part, Martin Chungong praised progress achieved during the Parliamentary Conference held in Azerbaijan within the framework of COP29, saying it demonstrated the “mobilising power” of parliaments worldwide.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Chungong was presented with the Milli Majlis honorary medal for his services in fostering constructive dialogue and effective cooperation between parliaments, as well as for his contribution to expanding bilateral and multilateral relations between Azerbaijan’s legislature and the IPU.
