Armenian PM says he hopes to visit Azerbaijan in 2028
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said he hopes to visit Azerbaijan in 2028 to attend the European Political Community (EPC) summit, highlighting improving regional relations.
“Hopefully, I will have the opportunity to visit Azerbaijan in 2028 for the EPC10 Summit. Armenia and Azerbaijan, by the way, reciprocally supported each other's candidacy to host EPC summits,” he said while speaking at the European Political Community summit in Yerevan, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
Pashinyan said the EPC format has played a significant role in building diplomatic contacts not only between Armenia and Azerbaijan, but also with regional partners including Türkiye.
“My first bilateral meeting with the President of Türkiye took place on the margins of the mentioned first EPC summit in Prague. And now the Vice President of Türkiye is here to participate in Yerevan's EPC Summit and is the first Vice President of Türkiye to come to Armenia,” Pashinyan said.
He also described the EPC framework as central to the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
“EPC format is very, very important. It played a crucial role in establishing peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan. In 2022, on the margins on the first EPC summit in Prague, a quadrilateral meeting was organized by President of France Emmanuel Macron and President of European Council Charles Michel. And there, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and I took a game-changing decision. Armenia and Azerbaijan recognized each other's territorial integrity and sovereignty based on the Almaty Declaration of 1991,” Pashinyan said.
He added that this understanding helped pave the way for further negotiations and ultimately led to the Washington Peace Summit in August 2025.
“There, in the White House, with the support and participation of US President Donald Trump, President of Azerbaijan and I adopted peace declaration. The US President also signed it as a witness. In the presence of the three leaders, foreign ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan initiated the agreement on the establishment of peace and interstate relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan,” Pashinyan reminded.
The Armenian prime minister also touched on the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP), which was agreed upon following the Washington summit. He emphasised that this route, by unblocking regional routes and creating new international corridors, will make a significant contribution to the stability of global supply chains.
“Now we have peace with Azerbaijan. It is already two years that we have had no casualties as a result of shootings with Azerbaijan. And these are unprecedented years since our independence. Now we are working closely with Azerbaijan to strengthen and institutionalize the peace of our two countries,” he said.
