Kabul calls on Baku to support Afghanistan's active participation in COP30 summit
Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Kabul Ilham Mammadov met with the head of Afghanistan’s National Environmental Protection Agency (NEPA), Matiul Haq Khalis, to discuss Kabul's participation in climate conferences and the potential expansion of bilateral cooperation.
During the meeting, the Afghan side expressed gratitude to Azerbaijan for successfully hosting the COP29 climate summit and for supporting Afghanistan’s participation in this important global forum, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
Both sides also shared views on cultural and regional ties between the two countries, as well as the impact of climate change on their shared geographic area.
The head of the agency emphasised the importance of enhancing bilateral cooperation in the field of environmental protection and called on Azerbaijan to support Afghanistan’s active participation in COP30, which will be held in Brazil. He also expressed Afghanistan’s intention to establish scientific and technical exchanges, build human resource capacity, and sign agreements on joint environmental initiatives.
Ambassador Ilham Mammadov, in turn, highlighted the importance of including Afghanistan in global climate processes and underscored the country’s vulnerability to climate change. The diplomat pointed to the devastating impact of recent floods in Afghanistan and added that Azerbaijan is ready to share its expertise in renewable energy as it gradually phases out the use of fossil fuels.
At the end of the meeting, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to combating climate change, achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, and participating in regional and international environmental initiatives.
