Azerbaijan receives 2,309 evacuees from Iran in two weeks
Between 8:00 on February 28 and 10:00 on March 12, a total of 2,309 people were evacuated from Iran to Azerbaijan.
Among the evacuees, 403 are Azerbaijani citizens, Caliber.Az reports per local media.
A major military conflict erupted on February 28, 2026, after the United States and Israel launched coordinated airstrikes and missile attacks on multiple Iranian targets, dramatically escalating violence across the Middle East.
These strikes triggered Iranian retaliation with missiles, drones and attacks on neighbouring countries, creating widespread security risks for civilians and foreign nationals in Iran.
The escalation disrupted air travel and normal transport, forcing many countries to organise evacuations for their citizens; land borders such as Azerbaijan’s became key exit routes for those unable to fly out due to closed airspace and security concerns.
