Kazakhstan, France advance renewable energy project with $1.2 billion wind farm

24 April 2026 13:35

Kazakhstan has moved forward with a large-scale renewable energy initiative after state-owned and international partners signed financing agreements for the construction of the Mirny Wind Farm, a 1 GW project in the country’s south.

The agreements were concluded between Kazakh Samruk-Kazyna, KazMunayGas, and French TotalEnergies firms, Caliber.Az reports per KazMunayGas

The Mirny Wind Farm will be located in the Moyinkum district of the Zhambyl region and is expected to be equipped with an advanced energy storage system to support grid stability and improve the integration of renewable energy sources.

The total investment in the project is estimated at approximately $1.2 billion, with a substantial portion provided by foreign capital. The wind farm is scheduled to be fully commissioned in the fourth quarter of 2028.

Officials describe the Mirny project as a key component of KazMunayGas’s long-term Low-Carbon Development Program through 2060. The initiative is part of Kazakhstan’s broader strategy to expand renewable energy capacity, reduce carbon emissions, and align with global climate goals.

The project is also expected to improve the reliability of electricity supply in southern Kazakhstan, strengthen the national power grid, and increase the share of renewable energy in the country’s energy mix. Authorities say it will additionally contribute to socio-economic development in the Zhambyl region through infrastructure investment and job creation during construction and operation phases.

Energy sector stakeholders view the project as a significant step in Kazakhstan’s transition toward greener energy systems, reflecting growing cooperation between state entities and international energy companies in large-scale clean energy infrastructure.
