“Kazakhstan syndrome” broken Azerbaijan reach EURO quarter-finals
Azerbaijan’s national minifootball team has reached the quarter-finals of the European Championship after a confident 3–2 victory, decisively overcoming the so-called “Kazakhstan syndrome”.
The Round of 16 clash could hardly have started better for Azerbaijan. In the second minute, Ravan Karimov opened the scoring with a superb finish, and just five minutes later, Isa Atayev doubled the lead. Kazakhstan responded quickly, pulling one back within minutes, but Azerbaijan maintained control of the game. By the end of the first half, it was already clear that Elshad Guliyev’s side was determined not to let their advantage slip.

The decisive third goal, scored by Mahammad Khalilov, effectively sealed the contest, with Kazakhstan managing only a late consolation to make it 3–2. With that, Azerbaijan booked their place in the quarter-finals, joining the continent’s eight strongest teams. Given the team’s pedigree and previous achievements, however, this should not be considered the ceiling of their ambitions.
Speaking of titles and what they represent, it is difficult to ignore that the overall impression of the victory was somewhat marred by theatrical falls and time-wasting from the Azerbaijani side. While such tactics are commonly employed by teams protecting a narrow lead in high-stakes matches, this national team — as one would expect — carries a very different standard and reputation.
World champions of 2025 and European champions of 2022, who were denied a repeat of that success at the previous continental tournament precisely due to a defeat against Kazakhstan, are held to higher expectations. In that context, such behaviour feels out of place.
One can only hope that in the upcoming match against the Czech Republic — who earlier secured a comfortable 2–0 victory over Montenegro — the team will focus on attractive, attacking football and the kind of brilliance that brought them their titles. The theatrics and simulation would be better left to opponents who have nothing else to rely on.
We will find out whether these expectations are justified tonight at midnight Baku time.
