Masdar commits to join UAE delegation at COP29, backs Azerbaijan's renewable energy goals
Maryam Al Mazrouei, Head of Development and Investment (CIS) at Masdar, stated that Masdar is committed to joining the UAE delegation at COP29 and is eager to support Azerbaijan's government for a successful conference this year.
"Every initiative Masdar undertakes in Azerbaijan contributes to the national target of tripling renewable energy capacity by 2030, aligning with Azerbaijan's goal of achieving 30 per cent renewable energy capacity by the same year. As part of the UAE delegation, we will participate actively," she stated, Caliber.Az reports citing her interview with local media.
Regarding the potential for new agreements during COP, Al Mazrouei expressed personal enthusiasm for advancing and signing additional agreements between the parties.
"Azerbaijan is a crucial strategic market for Masdar. Discussions began with the Ministry of Energy in 2018-2019, and we already have one successful operational project: the 230 MW Garadagh solar PV project. Moving forward, through strategic collaboration with the Ministry of Energy of Azerbaijan and Azerenergy, we aim to expand on this success," she added.
In November of this year, Azerbaijan will host COP29, the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, as decided during the COP28 plenary meeting in Dubai on December 11 last year. Over a span of two weeks, Baku will welcome approximately 70,000–80,000 foreign guests, making it a focal point on the global stage.
The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, signed at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in June 1992, aims to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. COP, short for Conference of Parties, serves as the highest legislative body overseeing the convention's implementation, with 198 countries currently party to the agreement. Unless otherwise decided, COP convenes annually, with the inaugural event held in March 1995 in Berlin, Germany, and its secretariat headquartered in Bonn.
