Media: Trump’s Ukraine peace plan could lift sanctions on Russia
A new peace proposal from US President Donald Trump regarding Ukraine reportedly includes lifting sanctions on Russia, though details about which sanctions would be removed remain unclear.
According to a person familiar with the matter, the proposal includes demands for Ukraine to cede territories in eastern Donbas to Moscow and to lift sanctions on Russia, Bloomberg reports.
Reports indicate that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has received signals from the United States encouraging him to accept a deal developed in coordination with Moscow.
Earlier, Axios cited sources claiming that the US is holding “secret consultations” with Russia to draft a potential peace agreement. The proposed US plan reportedly contains 28 points and includes provisions that Western media have described as “major concessions to Russia.” These reportedly call for reducing the Ukrainian Armed Forces by approximately 2.5 times, relinquishing long-range missiles capable of reaching Moscow and Saint Petersburg, granting Russian official status, and other measures.
Financial Times sources reported that the document was delivered to Ukrainian officials by US presidential special envoy Steve Witkoff during a meeting with Ukraine’s National Security Secretary Rustem Umerov. However, Zelenskyy is said to have declined discussions on the US-crafted plan and instead prepared an alternative proposal in consultation with European partners.
