Media: US begins military equipment transfer to Nigeria
At least three United States military aircraft touched down in Nigeria between February 12 and February 13, newspaper PUNCH reports.
The planes reportedly landed at military installations in Borno and other northeastern states. Officials at the Defence Headquarters confirmed that the aircraft were transporting ammunition supplied by the US government.
In separate interviews, senior officers explained that this shipment is part of American support for Nigeria’s ongoing fight against insecurity.
“Following Nigeria-US bilateral talks on security, the American government will not only deploy soldiers but also provide necessary logistics, including ammunition, to fight the insurgents,” one officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated.
Another senior officer added that the delivery is part of routine operational logistics, as the military often needs to replenish ammunition after field operations.
In 2025, United States President Donald Trump announced that he would deploy military forces to Nigeria if the government did not halt what he called the genocide of Christians.
Following this warning and Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern, the US conducted an airstrike against Islamic State fighters in Sokoto State on Christmas Day.
