Moldova hopes to receive gas from Azerbaijan through Romania

04 February 2023 09:42

Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament, head of the ruling Action and Solidarity Party Igor Grosu has said that Moldova expects to receive gas from Azerbaijan through Romania thanks to an agreement signed by the State Oil Company of the Azerbaijan Republic SOCAR and the Romanian Romgaz S.A.

"Proceeding from this agreement, gas from Azerbaijan will be supplied through Türkiye to Romania via the Trans-Balkan gas pipeline. This will allow Moldova to buy it. We will use this additional source of gas," Grosu told TVR Moldova, Report informs.

He said that gas from Romania to Moldova can be supplied via the Ungheni-Iasi gas pipeline stretching 43.2 kilometres, which was built thanks to the EU’s assistance in 2014 and has not been used all these years.

Grosu noted that if the price is reasonable, Moldova will be able to pump it into the underground storage facilities of neighbouring countries as it does not have its own underground storage facilities.

The throughput capacity of the gas pipeline from Romania is 1.5 billion cubic metres per year, while the country consumes up to three billion cubic metres of gas.

SOCAR and Romgaz signed a contract on the supply of up to one billion cubic metres of gas from Azerbaijan to Romania in Baku on February 3.
