Moldovan envoy: Azerbaijan’s role in Europe’s energy security continues to grow
Azerbaijan’s role in strengthening Europe’s energy security is steadily increasing, and Moldova is keen to deepen cooperation with Baku in this field, Moldovan Ambassador to Azerbaijan Alexandr Esaulenco said.
“I would like to emphasise, first of all, the energy sector, where Azerbaijan is playing an increasingly important role when it comes to the energy security of the European continent — something that also directly concerns the Republic of Moldova,” Esaulenco noted. “Naturally, our key interest lies in expanding bilateral cooperation in this area.”
The ambassador said that energy cooperation was the central focus of discussions during the April meeting of the Azerbaijan–Moldova Intergovernmental Commission (IGC).
He also recalled that Moldovan President Maia Sandu reiterated this priority during her talks with Azerbaijani officials at the summit of heads of state in Copenhagen last week.
“Possible supplies of Azerbaijani gas to Moldova would significantly enhance our country’s energy security and help us counter a broad range of threats posed by certain neighbours who use Moldova’s dependence on energy to pursue their political aims,” Esaulenco said.
He added that Azerbaijan and Moldova have substantial untapped potential to expand trade and economic relations.
“The current figures of our trade turnover do not reflect the full potential that exists, and there is certainly room for growth in trade between our countries,” the ambassador concluded.
