MP: Türkiye, Georgia commend Azerbaijan’s role in COP29 and regional stability
The parliaments of Türkiye and Georgia have expressed unanimous support for Azerbaijan's positions and commended the organization and outcomes of the 29th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), held in Baku.
This was revealed by Samad Seyidov, Chairman of the Milli Majlis (parliament) Committee on International Relations and Interparliamentary Affairs, during his comments on the results of the ninth trilateral meeting of the parliamentary foreign relations committees of Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, which took place in Ankara, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
Seyidov highlighted that Azerbaijan proposed involving Central Asian allies in interparliamentary dialogue formats during the discussions in Ankara.
He reiterated Baku's commitment to strengthening ties with Turkic nations across various fields, citing President Ilham Aliyev’s vision of the "Turkic world as a family for Azerbaijan."
"Azerbaijan is keen on deepening relations between our region and the Central Asian states," Seyidov affirmed, noting that President Aliyev’s policies aimed at uniting Turkic nations have garnered significant global interest.
Discussing collaboration with Türkiye and Georgia, Seyidov emphasized Azerbaijan's strong interest in enhancing ties with both Ankara and Tbilisi.
He noted that the primary sources of threats to the national security of Türkiye, Azerbaijan, and Georgia originate outside the region.
"Forces that aim to hinder our countries’ development and impose their own agendas realize that regional processes are dismantling their plans. Armenia must also understand that no external actors can replace direct regional cooperation. Each nation’s priority should be the overall interests of the region," Seyidov remarked.
He concluded by pointing to Azerbaijan’s policy of contributing to peace, stability, and development for all neighbouring countries as an exemplary model.
To recall, the UN's COP29 climate change conference, hosted in Baku, was hailed as a critical milestone in international climate negotiations, addressing long-standing issues and making significant strides. One of the key outcomes was the resolution of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which had stalled for nearly a decade. This breakthrough enables the operationalization of carbon markets, allowing for more efficient transnational climate actions, such as building wind farms and decommissioning coal plants.
Additionally, the conference focused on increasing financial support from developed nations to assist developing countries in tackling climate issues. A key decision was made to boost annual contributions to climate financing from $100 billion to at least $300 billion.
