New Syrian authorities reject war with Israel, focus on reconstruction
The new Syrian authorities have expressed their stance of not pursuing war with Israel, while firmly rejecting any Israeli military incursions into Syrian territory.
This statement was made by Ahmed al-Sharaa, the leader of Syrian new administration, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.
"Our priority at this stage is to focus on rebuilding Syria. We are not intending to go to war with Israel," al-Sharaa said.
The statement comes amid a backdrop of significant political upheaval in Syria, following the opposition's capture of Damascus on December 8, marking the conclusion of a rapid offensive that began in late November. The offensive, which involved the US- and Turkish-backed Free Syrian Army alongside fighters from terrorist groups, was met with resistance from the government forces of Bashar al-Assad, which received support from Russia and Iran.
On the same day that Damascus fell, the Syrian army command declared the end of Assad’s rule, stating that the Syrian president had resigned.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs later confirmed that Assad had left Syria, with reports suggesting that he and his family sought asylum in Russia, granted on humanitarian grounds.
In the wake of the political changes, Syria has called upon the Arab League for assistance in the country's reconstruction, a critical issue in light of the widespread devastation caused by years of civil war.
