Akgün’s appointment was preceded by the presentation of his credentials to Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov on January 31, 2025. The formal acceptance of the ambassador’s credentials marks the beginning of his tenure in Baku.
Birol Akgün was appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Türkiye to Azerbaijan by a decree from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on January 10, 2025.
Prior to this appointment, Akgün served as the chairman of the Turkish Educational Foundation Maarif Vakfı.
His appointment follows the completion of the diplomatic mission of the previous ambassador, Cahit Bağçı, whose tenure in Azerbaijan concluded on December 14, 2024.
Bağçı was recently honoured with a letter of thanks for his significant contributions to strengthening bilateral ties between Türkiye and Azerbaijan.
The new ambassador's arrival comes at a time of continued strong bilateral relations between Türkiye and Azerbaijan, and his diplomatic mission is expected to further strengthen the ties between the two countries.
