Baku welcomes ceasefire between India, Pakistan
The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has issued a statement welcoming a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
“We welcome the declaration of a ceasefire between the Republic of India and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. We express our hope that this ceasefire will contribute to the reduction of tensions in the region, as well as to the establishment of lasting peace and stability,” Caliber.Az reports, citing the Ministry’s statement published on its website.
The Ministry called on the parties to engage in productive dialogue aimed at resolving outstanding issues and building mutual trust.
On May 10, 2025, India and Pakistan agreed to a "full and immediate" ceasefire following a period of intense military escalation, particularly in the Kashmir region. The agreement was announced by U.S. President Donald Trump after overnight talks mediated by the United States, involving Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance. Both Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif participated in these discussions.
The ceasefire aimed to halt hostilities that had resulted in significant casualties and displacement. However, within hours of the announcement, both nations accused each other of violating the truce. Explosions and drone intrusions were reported in Indian-administered Kashmir, leading to air defence responses in cities like Srinagar and Jammu. India claimed Pakistan breached the ceasefire, while Pakistan denied the allegations and called for restraint.
Despite these challenges, both countries have expressed a desire to maintain peace. Military leaders from India and Pakistan are scheduled to resume talks on May 12 to address ongoing tensions and reinforce the ceasefire agreement.
