OPEC chief hails Baku as birthplace of global oil industry
Baku is the birthplace of the global oil industry and has played a pivotal role in the history of oil production, OPEC Secretary General Haitham Al Ghais said.
Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Technical Committee of the OPEC+ Charter of Cooperation in the Azerbaijani capital, Al Ghais said relations between OPEC and Azerbaijan had strengthened over the years through the Declaration of Cooperation, the OPEC+ framework and other mechanisms of collaboration, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
He also highlighted Baku's historical contribution to the oil industry, noting that the world's first mechanically drilled oil well was commissioned in Bibi-Heybat in 1846, the first wooden oil derrick was built in 1871, and the world's first oil tanker was launched in 1877.
