Pashinyan: Armenia needs to decide between EU, EAEU
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has acknowledged that Armenia can not simultaneously be a member of both the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and the European Union (EU), stating that a strategic choice will eventually have to be made.
Speaking at a panel discussion during the GLOBSEC 2025 forum in Czechia, Pashinyan addressed questions regarding Armenia’s path toward EU integration and how it plans to reconcile that with its current membership in the EAEU, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.
“We understand that we can’t be member of EAEU and EU at the same time and obviously at a point in the future we will need to make a decision,” Pashinyan said. “But it’s very important that the decision will be made by the citizens of Armenia, of course with the leadership of the government and parliament of Armenia.”
Pashinyan emphasised that Yerevan will continue pursuing reforms aligned with EU norms in the meantime. He noted that when the time scones, the country will put that question on the table, into the political agenda of Armenia and will make the decision together with its citizens.
Earlier this year, the Armenian parliament adopted a bill on EU integration, signaling a growing shift in the country’s foreign policy orientation.
