Poland’s PM Tusk responds to Trump’s EU criticism “EU wasn’t formed to screw anyone”
On February 27, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk firmly rejected US President Donald Trump's recent comment that the European Union was created to “screw the United States.”
Tusk, who is also a former European Council chief, took to X page in response to Trump’s remarks, which were made on February 26 amidst growing tensions between Washington and its European allies, Caliber.Az reports.
In his post, Tusk said, “The EU wasn’t formed to screw anyone. Quite the opposite. It was formed to maintain peace, to build respect among our nations, to create free and fair trade, and to strengthen our transatlantic friendship. As simple as that.”
Trump had stated during a press conference in Washington, “Look, let’s be honest, the European Union was formed in order to screw the United States. That’s the purpose of it, and they’ve done a good job of it.” His comments were followed by a threat to impose 25-percent tariffs on goods imported from the EU.
Poland, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, is keen to prevent escalating tensions. Earlier this month, Tusk warned against a “totally unnecessary and stupid” trade war.
The European Commission, the EU’s executive body, has also indicated it would respond “firmly and immediately” should Trump move forward with the new tariffs.
