Polish PM Tusk urges maximising benefits from Trump’s three-month tariff pause
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called on European and American leaders to "extract maximum benefit" from US President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend tariffs for 90 days.
Tusk made the comments on X during a meeting in Washington, stating, “Maintaining close transatlantic relations is a common responsibility of Europeans and Americans, regardless of temporary turbulences. So let’s make the best of the next 90 days,” Caliber.Az reports.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced a three-month pause on "reciprocal" tariffs, excluding China, marking a reversal from his previous stance on high tariffs. However, tariffs on China, the world’s second-largest economy, will increase to 125% from 104% after China imposed retaliatory tariffs.
Trump stated, "Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately."
While Mexico and Canada are exempt from the 10% tariffs, tariffs on goods from the two countries will remain at 25% unless compliant with the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Wall Street responded positively, with stocks surging, including a 7.87% increase in the Dow, marking the best day for the S&P 500 since 2008.
Trump attributed his decision to the growing calls for flexibility, saying, "You have to have flexibility."
